Chapter 8 - The Waitress's Courage

Claire did not run.
She looked back down at the terrified eight-year-old girl in the yellow dress, seeing the tears welling in Audrey's desperate, pleading eyes. Claire's empathy completely overrode her survival instincts. She reached out, gently placing her hands over Audrey's frantically shaking fingers, offering a firm, deeply protective squeeze that promised absolute, unwavering support.
"I believe you," Claire signed back swiftly, her face set in a mask of absolute, unyielding courage. "I will protect you."
Claire slowly stood up from the polished marble floor.
The calm, submissive demeanor of the polite restaurant waitress completely evaporated into the warm, candlelit air. She squared her shoulders, her brown hair catching the light of the crystal chandeliers. She wasn't just facing an angry customer anymore; she was stepping directly into the center of a lethal mafia war.
Dominic Vale frowned deeply, completely confused by the sudden, intense shift in the atmosphere. He looked at Claire, his dark eyes demanding immediate answers.
"What did she say to you?" Dominic demanded, his deep voice rumbling with a sudden, dark suspicion. He could sense the terrifying tension radiating from the waitress, and the instincts that had kept him alive in the underworld for a decade were screaming at him that something was catastrophically wrong.
Claire didn't immediately answer the boss.
Instead, she slowly turned her head. She looked directly across the white-clothed table, her fierce, empathetic eyes locking onto the trusted advisor in the gray suit. She stared pointedly, deliberately, and undeniably at the faint, ugly burn scars wrapping around Silas’s wrist.

Silas froze, his hand completely stopping inside his suit jacket.
