Chapter 7 - The Terrifying Truth

The sheer, horrifying magnitude of the little girl's silent confession hit Claire like a physical, devastating blow to the chest.

Claire stopped breathing. The luxury dining room around her seemed to spin violently. She was just a twenty-four-year-old waitress trying to survive in a difficult city. She had absolutely no connections, no power, and no protection.

She had just been handed a death sentence.

Through the frantic, terrified hand signs of an eight-year-old girl, Claire had just discovered that Dominic Vale's beloved wife hadn't died in a tragic, accidental fire. She had been brutally murdered. And the man who orchestrated the assassination, the man who poured the gasoline and struck the match, was sitting exactly four feet away, currently serving as the mafia boss's most trusted, deeply entrenched right-hand man.

Audrey had seen him do it. The little girl had witnessed the murder of her own mother but had been completely unable to scream for help, locked inside her silent world, too traumatized and unable to sign the complex truth to her grieving, distracted father.

Claire looked up, her eyes locking briefly with Silas, the advisor.

Silas stared back at her. He didn't know sign language, but he was a seasoned, lethal criminal. He saw the exact moment the color completely drained from the waitress's face. He knew the little girl had just exposed him. Silas's hand slipped deeper into his suit jacket, his fingers wrapping around the cold steel grip of a suppressed firearm, fully prepared to murder the waitress right there in the middle of the crowded restaurant before she could translate the truth.

Claire had a split second to make a choice. She could drop her hands, apologize to the boss, run out the back door, and let the little girl remain trapped with her mother's killer.
