Chapter 3 - The Waitress's Secret

Claire was not just a waitress trying to make enough tips to pay her overpriced city rent. She had grown up with a profoundly deaf younger brother. For her entire life, American Sign Language hadn't just been a skill—it was her primary way of connecting with the person she loved most. Because of this, Claire possessed a hyper-vigilant, incredibly observant nature. She didn't just listen to what people said; she read their hands, their micro-expressions, and their body language.
All evening, Claire had been assigned to serve the exclusive VIP table in the corner of the luxury dining room.
She had noticed Dominic Vale’s fierce, protective demeanor, but her attention had been entirely drawn to the little girl in the yellow dress. Claire had watched Audrey closely, immediately recognizing the subtle, heartbreaking signs of deep trauma and absolute, paralyzing fear.
But Claire had also noticed something else. Something terrifying.
Audrey wasn't afraid of the bodyguards. She wasn't afraid of the loud restaurant. Audrey was completely, physically terrified of the man sitting directly across the table from her.
He was Dominic’s most trusted advisor, an older man in a gray suit who had been acting overly friendly all night, constantly leaning across the table to offer Audrey bread or smile at her. But every single time the advisor moved, Audrey would flinch violently, her knuckles turning stark white as she squeezed her stuffed rabbit.
Just moments ago, the advisor had leaned in closely, his hand reaching out to touch Audrey's shoulder. In a blind, desperate panic to escape his touch, Audrey had thrown herself backward in her chair, violently knocking her elbow into the crystal water glass Claire was actively refilling.
Dominic had been looking at the menu. He missed the advisor's reaching hand. He only saw the water spill, and he instantly unleashed his fury on the waitress.

But Claire knew the truth. And as she looked at the little girl hyperventilating in her chair, Claire realized she couldn't just walk away.
