Chapter 5 - The Boss's Confusion

The profound, agonizing terror etched into the eight-year-old's delicate features completely evaporated. It was instantly replaced by a look of intense, desperate focus. She loosened her death grip on the white stuffed rabbit, her small, trembling hands rising tentatively into the air.
"You know my words?" Audrey signed back, her small fingers moving with a fragile, heartbreaking hesitation, completely unable to believe that the waitress understood her.
"Yes," Claire signed in return, offering a gentle, incredibly reassuring smile that didn't reach her tense shoulders.
Dominic Vale, who had been mere seconds away from unleashing his violent wrath, stopped dead in his tracks. He stood right behind his daughter's chair, leaning in with a stern, watchful gaze. His dark, dangerous eyes darted rapidly between the kneeling waitress and his little girl.
The lethal, cold anger that had consumed him completely vanished, instantly replaced by a wave of profound, absolute shock. He watched in complete, paralyzed disbelief as his traumatized daughter—who hadn't communicated with anyone since the night of the fire—actively engaged in a fluid, silent conversation.
"What are you doing?" Dominic Vale whispered, his deep voice cracking with a sudden, overwhelming, and deeply vulnerable confusion. He raised a hand, signaling his heavily armed bodyguards to immediately stand down and back away.
Medium close-up: Claire didn't look up at the dangerous mafia boss. She maintained her gentle, unbreakable eye contact entirely with the little girl, wanting to establish a foundation of absolute trust before the situation escalated any further.
Claire raised her hands again, signing her name slowly, spelling it out letter by letter with perfect, practiced clarity.
"My name is Claire," she signed, placing her hand gently over her heart.
