Chapter 1 - The Standoff in the Snow

The icy Chicago wind howled, but it was nothing compared to the deadly silence outside the train station. Claire knelt in the freezing slush, her beige wool coat stained with dirty snow, her arms wrapped protectively around a sobbing six-year-old boy. Surrounding them was a wall of towering, ruthless men in dark overcoats. The metallic clicks of drawn weapons echoed through the winter air.

Stepping out of a black luxury SUV was a man who needed no introduction. Vincent. Tall, striking, with dark hair dusted by silver at the temples. He was the most feared syndicate boss in the city. His gray eyes were unsettlingly calm, fixed on Claire with the cold calculation of a predator. He thought she was the one who had tried to take his nephew.

Matteo, trembling in his navy blue puffer jacket, buried his face in Claire’s cream scarf. "I lost my uncle!" the boy sobbed frantically in Italian, terrified of the armed men, not realizing the boss standing behind them was the very man he was crying for.

Claire completely ignored the dangerous men closing in. She didn't raise her hands. She didn't beg for her life. Instead, she tightened her grip on the boy’s small hands, looked deep into his panicked eyes, and whispered in a rare, ancient dialect that hadn’t been heard in Chicago for decades.

"Breathe with me, sweetheart," Claire murmured in flawless, old Sicilian.

Vincent stopped dead in his tracks. The ruthless, untouchable mafia boss froze, the color draining from his face as a ghost from his past suddenly echoed in the freezing air.
