Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Claire met the gaze of Chicago’s most feared man without a single ounce of fear. She stood tall in the snow, the wind whipping her coat.
"A little," Claire replied, her voice calm and unapologetic. Then, she shifted her eyes directly to Sal, who was gripping his gun with white knuckles. "But I speak enough to know when someone is lying to you."
Sal’s face went pale. "Shut your mouth!" he barked. "Boss, she's trying to get into your head. She’s part of the Maroni crew, I swear it! Let me put a bullet in her and get Matteo home!"
"Sal," Vincent said softly.
The single word carried so much weight that the entire street seemed to hold its breath.
"Put the gun down," Vincent ordered.
"But Boss, she—"
"I said, put it down." Vincent handed Matteo to his lead bodyguard. He took a slow, menacing step toward Sal, then turned to look at Claire. "Why would my second-in-command be lying to me, stranger?"
Claire didn't flinch. "Because the men who actually tried to snatch your nephew inside that station had a black serpent tattooed on their right wrists. Just like the one your friend here is desperately trying to hide under his cuffs."
