Chapter 3 - The Interception

Claire shoved her way through the dense crowd, ignoring the angry shouts of businessmen as she pushed past them. The two men in leather jackets were mere feet away from the crying child. One of them reached into his coat, pulling out a dark cloth, while the other extended a massive, scarred hand toward the boy's shoulder.

"Hey!" Claire screamed at the top of her lungs.

The two men flinched, turning their heads just as Claire hurled her piping hot coffee directly into the face of the larger man. He roared in agony, stumbling backward into a luggage cart.

Before the second man could react, Claire slid across the polished stone floor, scooping the terrified boy into her arms. "Hold on tight!" she ordered. Matteo clung to her neck, sobbing violently as Claire bolted toward the station's heavy glass exit doors.

"Get them! Don't let her leave!" the second man yelled, recovering his footing and drawing a heavy, suppressed pistol from his jacket. The sight of the weapon sent the crowd into an absolute panic. Screams erupted, and commuters scattered in every direction, inadvertently creating a human blockade that slowed the kidnappers down.

Claire burst through the exit doors, hitting the freezing Chicago winter air. Her chest heaved, her black boots slipping on the winter slush. She thought she had made it. She thought they were safe. But as she ran toward the street, three black luxury SUVs suddenly swerved onto the curb, cutting off her only path of escape.
