Chapter 6 - The Traitor's Panic

Matteo finally turned his head. Blinking through his remaining tears, he saw the tall man standing behind them.
"Uncle Vincent!" the boy cried out, his voice filled with pure relief. He let go of Claire and ran through the snow, throwing his arms around Vincent’s legs.
Vincent knelt, picking the boy up and holding him tight, but his piercing gray eyes never left Claire. She remained kneeling in the snow, calm and unafraid, pulling her cream scarf tighter around her neck.
Before Vincent could speak, a black sedan screeched to a halt behind the SUVs. Sal, Vincent’s right-hand man, leapt out, sweating profusely despite the freezing cold.
"Boss! I got here as fast as I could!" Sal yelled, drawing his gun and pointing it directly at Claire. "Is this the bitch who took him? Let me finish her right now. We can't leave witnesses!"
Sal’s finger twitched on the trigger. He was desperate. Too desperate.
Claire stood up slowly, brushing the snow from her black tights. Her eyes flicked from the barrel of Sal’s gun to his wrist. As Sal’s sleeve rode up, she saw a distinctive, jagged black serpent tattoo. It was the exact same tattoo she had seen on the wrist of the man she threw coffee at inside the station.
