Chapter 2 - The Innocent Witness

To understand the sheer, apocalyptic magnitude of the betrayal, one had to look at the massive web of lies Serena had spun.

Serena had been Dominic’s girlfriend for the past eight months. She had played the role of the perfect, loving future stepmother flawlessly. She baked cookies with Rose, rubbed Dominic’s shoulders after his violent syndicate meetings, and completely embedded herself into the highest, most secure level of his criminal empire.

Dominic had trusted her implicitly, giving her full access to the impenetrable penthouse.

But Rose was incredibly observant. The five-year-old girl didn't trust the woman in the red silk dress. For weeks, Rose had quietly watched Serena sneaking around the penthouse when Dominic was asleep. She had seen Serena taking photos of security keypads and sliding tiny black boxes into the heavy grand piano.

Tonight, unable to hold the terrifying secret any longer, the brave little girl had finally grabbed her father by the hand and forced him to look inside the instrument.

Dominic stared at the high-tech cameras, the audio recorders, and the thick files of surveillance photographs nested carefully between the piano strings. The profound, agonizing betrayal registered in his natural micro-expressions.

He didn't just invite a spy into his home. He had invited a deadly assassin directly into his daughter's safe space.
