Chapter 3 - The Secret Surrogate

Vincent leaned forward, his elbows resting on the white tablecloth, entirely captivated by the woman soothing his child.
"My best pediatricians haven't been able to calm him like that in six months," Vincent stated, his voice a low, intense rumble. "Who are you?"
Emma kept her eyes locked on the sleeping baby. She didn't want to look up. She didn't want Vincent to see the sheer, agonizing heartbreak hiding behind her gentle smile.
"I just have a way with babies, sir," Emma replied quietly, her voice trembling slightly.
But Emma was lying.
She didn't just have a way with babies. She knew exactly how to rock Michael because she was the one who had carried him for nine months.
A year and a half ago, Emma had been completely destitute, drowning in her late father’s medical debt. Desperate, she had signed a highly classified, airtight legal contract to be a surrogate for a wealthy, anonymous family. She was artificially inseminated, carried the child perfectly, and gave birth in a private clinic.
She was blindfolded during the entire handoff. She never saw the parents. She never even got to hold him after he took his first breath.
But she remembered his exact heartbeat. She remembered the tiny, distinctive crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear—the exact same birthmark she had just seen on the baby currently sleeping in her arms.
The mafia boss wasn't just a stranger. He was the man who had bought her child.
