Chapter 3 - The Unbreakable Vow

"I know it feels like no one understands, Lucas," Maria replied softly, her dark eyes welling with a restrained, profound emotion. "But I'm right here."
Lucas shook his head frantically, the tears splashing onto his burgundy polo shirt. "Everyone leaves! Mommy left! The other nannies left! If I'm bad, you'll leave too! Just go away!"
He was testing her. He was purposely destroying the expensive artifacts in the mansion to force the rejection he believed was inevitable, trying to control the abandonment before it could hurt him again.
Maria didn't back away. She leaned slightly closer, her slow eye movement locking onto his tear-filled eyes.
"I'm not going to run from you," Maria stated softly, her voice carrying an absolute, determined, and unbreakable vow. "No matter how many statues you break, and no matter how much you yell. I am staying right here."
A few yards down the hallway, standing completely hidden in the shadows of the massive mahogany doorway, was Dominic.
The 38-year-old heavily muscular man was a terrifying force of nature in the city. He wore a dark blue tailored suit, his white shirt unbuttoned at the top to reveal a sliver of dark tattoos. He was Lucas's father, and the most feared mafia boss in Chicago.
