Chapter 1 - The Smashed Cake

The grand American Westchester estate ballroom was a blinding display of absolute wealth and power. Sparkling crystal chandeliers cast a warm, flickering candlelight over the polished marble floors, illuminating the hundreds of formally dressed, elite guests murmuring in the background.

Tonight was a celebration. It was the eighth birthday of Ethan Moretti, the sole heir to the most powerful syndicate empire in the country.

Ethan, a handsome young boy with short brown hair, wore a tailored dark blue suit and a matching bowtie. He stood in the center of the massive room, holding a pristine porcelain plate. Resting perfectly on the china was a thick, beautiful slice of his birthday cake, covered in intricate blue and white frosting.

He raised his silver fork, entirely unaware of the lethal danger sitting just inches from his mouth.

Suddenly, a tiny blur of cream-colored fabric darted out from the shadows of the catering doors.

It was Lily. A tiny, three-year-old girl with brown hair pinned back by a small bow, wearing a simple cream dress with gold embroidery. She sprinted across the slick marble floor with impossible speed.

Before Ethan could even take a breath, little Lily lunged forward and violently slapped the porcelain plate right out of the eight-year-old boy's hands.

The heavy plate crashed against the marble floor. The blue and white cake splattered violently across the pristine stone, completely ruined.
