Chapter 1 - The Miracle in the Ballroom

The magnificent Chicago charity gala was a blinding display of wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the massive ballroom, illuminating elaborate floral centerpieces and hundreds of formally dressed, elite guests.
But near the edge of the dance floor, the atmosphere was heavy with an unspoken, terrifying authority.
Luca Moretti, the thirty-nine-year-old undisputed boss of the Chicago underworld, stood silently in his expensive, tailored black suit. He was exceptionally handsome, his thick dark brown hair swept back, light stubble framing his sharp masculine jawline. Dark tattoos peeked out from his slightly open black dress shirt. He radiated a cold, commanding presence that kept the wealthy guests at a very nervous distance.
But beneath the ruthless exterior, Luca was a shattered father.
Sitting directly in front of him in a custom pink wheelchair was his three-year-old daughter, Sophia. She was breathtakingly beautiful, wearing a pale-yellow floral party dress with layered ruffles and a matching yellow ribbon in her golden-brown curls. For three agonizing years, since she was an infant, Sophia had been entirely paralyzed from the waist down, the victim of a supposed "rare spinal virus."
Hannah, a plus-sized, thirty-two-year-old waitress wearing a mint-green service dress and a white apron, approached the wheelchair holding a silver tray. Her blonde-brown hair was pinned into a neat bun.
Hannah crouched down beside the little girl, offering her a glass of apple juice.
"Apple juice again, sweetheart?" Hannah asked gently.
But as Hannah looked closely at the little girl’s face, her voice suddenly trembled. She completely froze, her expressive eyes widening in pure, visible shock as recognition slammed into her chest.
Sophia didn't reach for the juice.
