Chapter 5 - The Night of the Ambush

Luca stopped breathing. The muscles in his jaw locked so tightly they looked like they might snap.
Three years ago, when Sophia was barely an infant, Luca’s heavily armored convoy had been brutally ambushed by a rival syndicate on a dark, rainy highway outside the city. His wife, Elena, had been killed instantly in the crossfire. Luca had barely survived, pulling a bleeding, unconscious Sophia from the wreckage.
The doctors had told him the severe trauma to Sophia's infant spine was irreversible. The "rare virus" story was just a lie he fed the press to keep his daughter from looking weak to his enemies.
"The ambush," Luca whispered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "You were on the highway?"
"No," Hannah cried softly, shaking her head. "I was the pediatric nurse on duty when they brought her into the private underground trauma ward. You were in surgery. You didn't see what happened in the nursery."
Luca’s blood turned to absolute ice. "What happened in the nursery?"
Hannah swallowed hard, tears pouring down her cheeks. "The spinal damage from the crash wasn't permanent, Mr. Moretti. She was going to make a full recovery. But someone in your inner circle didn't want her to survive."
The wealthy guests gasped.

"Someone came into the nursery while she was sleeping," Hannah choked out, holding Sophia tighter. "They injected a highly experimental, untraceable neurotoxin directly into her IV line. It was designed to slowly paralyze her nervous system and mimic a degenerative disease, so you wouldn't suspect a hit."
