Chapter 4 - The Terrifying Recognition

Luca stopped mere inches from where Hannah was kneeling on the floor.

He towered over her, his broad, muscular frame blocking the light from the chandeliers. He stared down at the waitress, who was still holding his daughter fiercely, protectively against her chest.

When Hannah finally looked up at him, the blood ran cold in Luca’s veins.

He didn't see the polite, invisible demeanor of a catering employee. He saw absolute, paralyzing fear. He saw profound guilt. But most terrifying of all, he saw recognition. This woman knew exactly who he was, and she looked at him as if he were the devil himself.

"Who are you?" Luca demanded. His voice was incredibly low, but it vibrated with a controlled, lethal fury that made the nearest guests physically step backward in fear.

Hannah’s lips trembled violently. She looked at the heavy, dark tattoos creeping up his neck. She looked at the bodyguards standing ready to execute any order he gave.

The entire ballroom waited with bated breath.

Hannah took a shuddering, ragged breath, gathering every ounce of courage she had left in her terrified soul. She kept her arms tightly wrapped around little Sophia.

"I was there, Mr. Moretti," Hannah whispered, her voice shattered, terrified, and echoing in the dead silence of the room. "I was there the night they tried to kill her."
