Chapter 3 - The Broken Tray

"HANNAH!" Sophia cried out, her sweet, high-pitched voice ringing through the massive, silent ballroom with pure, unadulterated joy.
Hannah, the waitress, turned ghostly pale.
The heavy silver tray slipped from her trembling hands. It crashed onto the hard marble floor with a deafening, violent clatter, sending the glass of apple juice shattering into a hundred pieces.
Hannah didn't care about the mess. She dropped directly to her knees right in the middle of the luxurious gala.
Sophia threw her tiny body into the waitress’s arms.
Hannah caught the little girl, burying her face into Sophia’s golden-brown curls. She clutched the child so tightly against her chest it looked as though she was trying to absorb her back into her own body.
Both of them began sobbing uncontrollably, completely ignoring the hundreds of elite guests and heavily armed mafia guards surrounding them.
"You kept your promise!" Sophia cried, her tiny hands gripping the white lace trim of Hannah’s mint-green uniform. "You said I would run again!"
Luca stood frozen, his outstretched hands slowly falling to his sides. The overwhelming joy of seeing his daughter walk was violently eclipsed by a dark, terrifying confusion.
His daughter hadn't spoken to a stranger in three years. And she certainly didn't know the catering staff.
