Chapter 8 - The Secret Antidote

Hannah gently wiped the tears from Sophia’s rosy cheeks, finally allowing the little girl to stand on her own two feet.

"When Marco left the nursery," Hannah explained, her voice trembling but filled with quiet pride. "I knew I couldn't go to the police. He owned them. So I stole the empty vial of the neurotoxin he used. I quit the hospital that same night and disappeared."

Luca stared at her, completely stunned.

"For three years, I worked three waitress jobs to pay for private black-market lab testing," Hannah cried, pulling a small, silver medical chain from under her uniform collar. Attached to it was a tiny, empty glass vial. "I finally synthesized the exact counter-agent. I’ve been secretly slipping it into her apple juice at every charity gala your family attends for the last six months."

Luca’s breath hitched in his throat.

This woman, a complete stranger with no money and no power, had spent three grueling years of her life secretly curing his daughter right under the nose of the most dangerous mafia syndicate in the country.

"You promised I would run, Hannah!" Sophia cheered, completely oblivious to the dark implications, hugging the waitress’s leg.

Luca, a man who bowed to absolutely no one, slowly dropped to both knees on the shattered glass and spilled apple juice.

He looked at Hannah, his piercing blue-gray eyes filled with an overwhelming, crushing weight of gratitude.
