Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Lie

Jack froze completely. The sheer terror in Clara's eyes felt like a physical bullet tearing through his chest.

"Kill her?" Jack whispered, his voice trembling with profound, agonizing confusion. He slowly raised his hands in surrender, taking a cautious step backward to give her space. "Clara, it's me. I thought you died in the explosion. I have mourned you every single day for six years. I would never hurt you."

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving, her eyes darting between Jack and the massive guards standing in the hallway.

"You ordered the hit," Clara sobbed, clutching Mia’s light blue floral dress tightly. "You sent her to finish it!"

"Sent who?!" Jack roared, the terrifying volume of his voice shaking the thin walls of the clinic.

Clara squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Victoria," Clara wept, speaking the name of Jack’s current, high-society fiancée. "Six years ago, while you were in Europe, Victoria came to the yacht. She told me that you were tired of me. She said you needed a strategic alliance with her cartel family to become the ultimate boss, and that a pregnant wife was a liability."

Jack stopped breathing. The blood in his veins turned to absolute, freezing ice.

"Victoria dragged me off the boat at gunpoint," Clara continued, her voice breaking with the trauma of that night. "She blew up the yacht to fake my death. She told me that if I ever tried to contact you, you would personally hunt me down and execute our baby. I spent six years hiding in the slums, working three jobs, just to keep Mia hidden from your wrath."

The cinematic realization crashed over Jack's hardened exterior.
