Chapter 1 - The Empty Chair

I sprinted down the grand hallway of the luxurious American mansion, my chest burning as pure, unadulterated panic hijacked my nervous system.

I burst through the heavy mahogany doors of the dining room and instantly froze in sheer, paralyzing terror.

"Amara, no!" I gasped, a frantic whisper tearing from my throat.

Sitting at the head of the massive dark wood table, bathed in the light of a crystal chandelier, was Julian. The thirty-four-year-old mafia boss wore an all-black three-piece suit, his visible hand tattoos gripping a silver fork. He was the most feared, ruthless man in the city.

And standing right next to his chair, completely unafraid, was my tiny three-year-old daughter, Amara, wearing her favorite teal tulle dress.

Julian slowly put down his fork. He turned his cold, lethal gaze toward the little girl. The two massive guards in black suits standing behind him immediately tensed up, their hands drifting toward their concealed weapons.

I braced for the boss to order us thrown into the street, or worse.

But Amara just stared back at the terrifying man without an ounce of fear. She looked at his plate, then pointed her small finger toward the empty chair beside him.

"Eating alone makes people sad," Amara stated in an innocent, clear voice.

To the absolute shock of the rigid guards, Julian did not get angry. He slowly reached over and pulled out the empty chair for her. "Come here," he commanded softly.

Amara climbed into the chair, leaning in close to whisper a secret. I stood in the doorway, clutching my face in absolute horror.

"My mommy said you used to have a little girl too," Amara whispered.

A tight, cinematic close-up captured Julian’s face. His cold, intimidating demeanor completely shattered. He slowly turned his head to look directly at me standing in the doorway in my black and white maid uniform.

His eyes widened as he processed my face, suddenly realizing my presence in his home was not a coincidence.
