Chapter 2 - The Stolen Nurse

The suffocating silence in the grand dining room was absolutely terrifying.
Julian didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He kept his eyes locked perfectly on my face and issued a single, dark command to his men.
"Get out. Close the doors."
The guards didn't hesitate. They swiftly exited the room, the heavy mahogany doors clicking shut with a final, ominous snap. We were completely trapped.
Julian stood up from the head of the table. His towering frame cast a heavy shadow over the elegant wall sconces. He slowly walked toward me, the cinematic realism of his absolute, suppressed fury making the temperature in the room plummet.
Three years ago, my name wasn't Grace the maid. I was Grace the neonatal nurse. I was the private nurse hired to care for Julian’s beautiful wife and their newborn baby. But one horrific night, the private hospital wing caught fire. Julian’s wife perished in the flames, and his newborn daughter was declared dead, lost to the ashes.
I was the only survivor. And I had disappeared without a trace the very next morning.
Julian stopped exactly two feet in front of me.
"You ran," Julian whispered, his voice vibrating with a demonic, heartbreaking rage. "You let my wife and my daughter burn, and you ran away like a coward. And now you have the audacity to sneak into my home disguised as a maid?"
"I didn't sneak in to steal from you, Julian!" I choked out, tears of sheer terror streaming down my face. "I came because we had nowhere else to hide!"
Julian grabbed my arm, his grip like a steel vise. "Hide from what?"
I looked past him, pointing a shaking finger at the three-year-old girl sitting quietly at his dining table.

"I didn't let your daughter burn, Julian," I whispered, my voice breaking.
👉 Julian turned to look at the little girl in the teal dress, and the impossible truth was about to completely destroy his mind.
