Chapter 4 - The Wolf at the Door

For three absolute, breathless minutes, Julian held his daughter, burying his face in her teal dress, weeping with a profound, agonizing relief that completely shattered his hardened exterior.
Amara gently patted his dark hair, entirely unfazed by the terrifying man's tears.
Finally, Julian slowly stood up. He wiped his face, his dark eyes turning pitch black as the grief evaporated, violently replaced by a cold, apocalyptic rage. The executioner had officially awakened.
"If you hid her perfectly for three years," Julian asked, his voice a low, lethal rumble, "why did you bring her directly into my house this week?"
I swallowed hard, my whole body shaking. "Because the man who set the fire found us last week. He recognized me at the grocery store. I knew he would send hitmen to our apartment. Your heavily guarded estate was the only fortress in the city he couldn't breach without an army."
Julian’s jaw locked. "Who was it, Grace? Give me a name, and I will burn his entire faction to the ground tonight."
Before I could utter a single syllable, the heavy mahogany doors of the dining room violently swung open.
Stepping into the room was Victor. He was Julian’s underboss, his most trusted lieutenant, and his own cousin.
"Julian, the shipments from Miami are—" Victor started to say, holding a stack of ledgers.
But Victor stopped dead in his tracks. His arrogant smile completely vanished. His eyes locked directly onto my face. The cinematic tension in the room spiked to a suffocating, terrifying level as Victor recognized the nurse who was supposed to be dead.
