Chapter 9 - The Debt Paid

The chaotic, violent energy completely evaporated from the cold cellar.
Julian let out a long, heavy breath, the terrifying executioner vanishing into the shadows. He holstered his weapon and walked slowly toward me.
I was still sitting against the concrete wall, trembling violently from the adrenaline.
Julian didn't loom over me. The towering, feared mafia boss dropped to his knees on the dirty floor, right in front of me. He reached out with gentle, shaking hands and carefully helped me stand up.
"You didn't run away like a coward," Julian whispered, his dark eyes filled with profound, overwhelming respect and deep remorse. "You sacrificed your entire life, your name, and your freedom to protect a child that wasn't even yours. You walked into the lion's den knowing Victor might kill you, just to bring her home to me."
Tears streamed down my face. "I promised your wife I wouldn't let them take her."
Julian gently pulled me into a tight, overwhelming embrace. It wasn't the embrace of a ruthless boss. It was the crushing, desperate gratitude of a father who had just been handed his entire world back from the ashes.
"You are never wearing a maid's uniform again, Grace," Julian vowed, the absolute power of his wealth backing every single syllable. "You will never scrub another floor. You will never hide in the shadows. From this exact second forward, you are under the absolute protection of my syndicate."
