Chapter 5 - The Underboss's Panic

All the color violently drained from Victor’s face. He physically staggered, his expensive suit suddenly feeling like a straightjacket.

He knew exactly who Amara was. And he knew that if I spoke, his life was completely over.

But Victor was a sociopath. He instantly recovered his composure, masking his terror with aggressive, manufactured outrage. He pointed a shaking finger directly at my face.

"Julian, get away from her!" Victor shouted, drawing his concealed weapon and aiming it directly at my chest. "She's an assassin! The Miami cartel sent a spy into the house disguised as a maid! I received the intel this morning!"

I screamed, throwing myself instinctively in front of Amara to shield her from the gun.

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly stepped between me and Victor, his broad shoulders completely blocking Victor's line of sight.

"Lower your weapon, Victor," Julian commanded with absolute, freezing authority.

"She is a threat to you, Boss!" Victor insisted, desperation bleeding into his voice. "She breached our security! Let me take her down to the cellar and interrogate her. I will find out exactly who sent her to infiltrate your home!"

I looked at Julian, my heart hammering violently against my ribs. If Julian handed me over to Victor, the traitor would murder me in the basement and finish the job he started three years ago.

Julian slowly turned his head and looked at me. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding stone. He offered no warmth, no protection.
