Chapter 1 - The Broken Glasses

The bright, bustling school hallway was supposed to be a place of normal afternoon pickups. But near the main entrance, a quiet, devastating betrayal was unfolding right in the open.
Brenda, an elegant woman in her forties wearing expensive designer clothes, knelt gracefully on the polished floor. She was smiling warmly at her twelve-year-old biological son, Dominic. In his hands, Dominic proudly held a brand new, highly exclusive pair of luxury sneakers that cost over eight hundred dollars.
"You deserve the best shoes, sweetie," Brenda cooed, gently fixing her son's collar.
But Brenda was completely ignoring the ten-year-old girl standing right next to them.
Rosie stood awkwardly in her faded yellow sweater. She was Brenda’s stepdaughter. But what caught the immediate attention of anyone walking by wasn't her cheap clothes. It was her face.
Rosie was wearing a pair of thick, purple prescription glasses. The entire bridge of the frames was violently snapped in half. It was held together by a massive, embarrassing wad of thick white medical tape. The glasses sat crookedly on her small face, digging painfully into the bridge of her nose.
Suddenly, heavy, urgent footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Frank, a hardworking man in his forties wearing a gray mechanic's work shirt, walked up to his family. He had just rushed from his auto shop to make the afternoon pickup.
He looked at his stepson's incredibly expensive new sneakers. And then, he stared in absolute, paralyzing shock at his daughter's face.
