Chapter 4 - The Fake Prescription

The doctor looked down at the medical file on his desk, and then looked back at Frank with deep sympathy.

"I haven't seen Rosie in two years, Frank," the doctor revealed quietly. "According to her chart, the last time she had an exam was when her biological mother was still alive."

Frank stopped breathing. The air in his lungs violently turned to dust.

"That's impossible," Frank stammered, pulling off his work cap. "Brenda took her twice this year. She brought home the receipts. I paid for the premium lenses."

The doctor sighed, handing the taped purple glasses over to Frank.

"These aren't premium lenses, Frank," the doctor explained softly. "These are cheap, over-the-counter reading glasses from a pharmacy. Someone just popped the lenses out and glued them into these old frames. If she keeps wearing these, she is going to suffer severe, permanent damage to her optic nerves."

Frank stared at the cheap plastic frames in his calloused hands.

The cinematic realization crashed over him with the force of a nuclear bomb. Brenda hadn't just stolen the five hundred dollars today. For two entire years, she had been faking doctor's appointments. She had been forging medical receipts. She had been intentionally blinding his daughter to steal the medical money to fund her own luxurious lifestyle.

"Dad?" Rosie whispered from the exam chair, squinting blindly toward his voice. "Are you mad at me?"

"No, baby," Frank choked out, tears of pure, agonizing guilt and rage welling in his eyes. "I'm not mad at you."
