Chapter 1 - The Empty Hands

The magnificent two-story family mansion in Wheaton, Illinois, was a cinematic display of Christmas luxury. Glowing golden fairy lights and expensive red and gold ornaments weighed down the massive tree beside the marble fireplace.

The cream carpet was entirely covered in torn wrapping paper and luxury gift boxes. But the festive warmth completely vanished in a single, cruel moment.

Evelyn, a wealthy-looking woman wearing a deep burgundy-red velvet dress, happily handed her teenage granddaughter, Chloe, a massive luxury gift box containing a top-of-the-line tablet. Chloe’s parents, Mark and Dana, smiled proudly.

But standing just a few feet away was eleven-year-old Leslie.

She wore a forest-green knitted sweater, her hands politely folded in front of her. She was the only child in the room holding absolutely nothing. She had waited patiently as every single other family member received lavish presents.

Evelyn finally looked down at her small red velvet gift notebook. She didn’t look apologetic. She looked perfectly, coldly calculated. She snapped the notebook shut with a sharp click.
