Chapter 2 - The Cold Dismissal

A tight, agonizing silence fell over the luxurious living room.

Leslie’s sweet, hopeful smile slowly dissolved. The eleven-year-old girl looked down at Chloe’s expensive new tablet, and then at the empty space beneath the massive Christmas tree.

Heavy tears gathered in her soft brown eyes, but she bit her lip, forcing herself not to cry in front of her relatives.

Standing right beside her, Rachel felt her blood turn to absolute ice. Rachel was a beautiful thirty-six-year-old woman in a sophisticated dark navy tailored wool coat. She stared at her mother, Evelyn, her expression violently shifting from confusion to profound, paralyzing disbelief.

"You bought everyone gifts except my daughter?" Rachel asked, her voice trembling with tightly controlled, deeply wounded anger.

Evelyn didn't even flinch. The matriarch folded her arms, her pearl earrings catching the crystal chandelier light, completely devoid of remorse.

Mark, Rachel’s favored older brother, remained entirely silent. His wife Dana actively avoided eye contact. Nobody defended the little girl.

Then, Thomas, the stern, silver-haired grandfather in a charcoal cashmere sweater, stepped forward from the fireplace. He pointed an authoritative, impatient finger directly at Rachel.
