Chapter 4 - The Hypocritical Text

Later that evening, the snow fell quietly outside Rachel’s modest but warm home.
She had spent the last two hours holding Leslie, drinking hot cocoa, and assuring her daughter that she was endlessly loved and valued. Once Leslie finally fell asleep, Rachel sat alone in her softly lit living room.
The heavy, agonizing weight of the evening settled over her.
Suddenly, the screen of her smartphone lit up on the coffee table. It was a text message from Thomas. He didn't apologize. He didn't ask if Leslie was okay. The message was cold, demanding, and incredibly arrogant.
"Rachel, don't forget the $1,850 mortgage transfer is due on the 1st. Make sure it clears."
Rachel stared at the screen, her eyes narrowing as the memory of her daughter's humiliation violently resurfaced.
Her parents loved projecting the image of extreme, generational wealth. They lived in an elegant mansion, hosted lavish parties, and bought Mark’s family endless luxury items.
But it was a massive, carefully constructed lie.
