Chapter 2 - The Ultimatum

The entire luxury dining room fell dead silent. The elite guests froze, their wine glasses hovering in the air as they stared at the heartbreaking scene.
Carmen didn't look ashamed. She gasped dramatically, clutching her chest in mock offense, playing the victim for her high-society friends.
"She isn't a biological granddaughter, Mauricio!" Carmen declared defensively, her silver sequined gown catching the light as she pointed a manicured finger at the trembling child. "This is a private family holiday! She is a charity case you adopted off the street! I will not have my bloodline’s reputation ruined by letting a stray sit at my dining table!"
Mauricio’s jaw locked. His dark eyes turned blacker than midnight.
He didn't scream at his mother. He didn't argue. The cinematic realism of his restraint was infinitely more terrifying than any shout. He completely ignored his mother’s cruel words and turned his back on her.
He walked over to the trash can and slowly knelt down to Renata's level. He looked at her dirty, torn clothes and her tear-stained cheeks.
He gently, warmly offered his large hand to his frightened daughter.
"You are my daughter," Mauricio stated, his voice incredibly gentle but vibrating with firm, unbreakable authority. "Come with me."
Renata sniffled, slowly stepping away from the trash can. She placed her tiny hand inside his. Mauricio stood up, lifting her into his strong arms, holding her tightly against his dark grey polo shirt.
Carmen panicked as she saw Mauricio walking toward the exit. If he left the estate tonight, her master plan would fall apart.
"Mauricio, you can't just leave!" Carmen shrieked hysterically. "If you walk out that door with her, you are out of the family! You will lose your entire inheritance!"
Mauricio stopped. He turned his head slightly, glaring over his shoulder at his mother with absolute, cold finality.
