Chapter 3 - The Hidden Object

Mauricio carried Renata directly out of the mansion and into the freezing Christmas night. He strapped her gently into the backseat of his armored SUV, wrapping his heavy cashmere winter coat around her shivering shoulders to cover the humiliating, torn grey rags.

He got into the driver’s seat, gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned stark white. The sheer, explosive rage boiling in his veins was threatening to consume him.

"I am so incredibly sorry, Renata," Mauricio whispered, tears of profound guilt and anger filling his eyes. "I never should have left you alone with her. I thought she was finally accepting you."

Renata wiped her nose, looking up at her father with wide, innocent eyes.

"It's okay, Daddy," Renata said softly. "But Grandma was really mad today. She locked me in the big office before dinner and made me put these dirty clothes on."

Mauricio frowned, his tactical mind instantly snapping to attention. "She locked you in my father's old study?"

"Yes," Renata nodded. "She forgot to lock the heavy metal box in the wall. I saw her hide something shiny inside it before she left the room. I didn't want her to have it, because she's mean. So I took it."

Mauricio stopped breathing. The heavy metal box in the wall was the biometric safe belonging to his late father, the billionaire patriarch who had passed away just two months ago.

Renata reached her tiny hand deep into the pocket of the torn, oversized grey pants Carmen had forced her to wear.

She pulled out a small, sleek, encrypted silver flash drive.

She pressed it directly into Mauricio’s palm.
