Chapter 6 - The Velvet Dress

An hour and a half later, the luxury Christmas dinner back at the mansion was in full swing.
The elite guests were finishing their expensive desserts, sipping vintage wine beneath the crystal chandeliers. Carmen was holding court at the head of the table in her silver sequined gown, laughing loudly and pretending her son’s sudden departure was just a minor, dramatic inconvenience. She fully believed she had won.
Suddenly, the massive, heavy mahogany doors of the dining hall burst open with a deafening crash.
The orchestra abruptly stopped playing. Every single wealthy guest turned their heads in absolute shock.
Standing in the doorway was Mauricio. He looked immaculate, fierce, and completely untouchable.
But it was the little girl holding his hand that made the entire room gasp.
Renata was no longer wearing dirty, torn grey rags. She was wearing a breathtaking, custom-tailored dark emerald velvet dress with a crisp white lace collar. Her messy brown hair had been brushed and pinned back with a sparkling crystal bow. She wore pristine white tights and shiny black patent-leather shoes.
She didn't look like a stray. She looked exactly like absolute royalty.
Carmen’s arrogant smile violently slid off her face. The color drained from her heavily contoured cheeks, leaving her looking completely pale with sudden, unadulterated panic.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Carmen shrieked, standing up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the marble floor. "I told you to leave! Security! Remove them from my house immediately!"
Mauricio didn't flinch. He walked slowly and powerfully into the center of the dining hall, leading Renata right to the head of the table.
