Chapter 2 - The Emergency Call

The heavy, toxic tension completely paralyzed the cluttered laundry room.
Miles away, standing in a dusty, working-class construction yard, was Leo. He was a rugged, thirty-something man with grease on his hands and a deeply worn canvas jacket. He was gripping his cracked smartphone so hard his knuckles were entirely white.
Leo was Maisie’s biological father.
To understand the absolute, bone-chilling nightmare currently freezing the blood in Leo's veins, one had to look at the last two years of his life. Leo’s ex-wife, Clara, had married a terrifyingly wealthy, incredibly arrogant billionaire surgeon named Arthur. Arthur had used his massive corporate wealth and elite legal team to completely destroy Leo in family court, framing the working-class carpenter as an unfit father and stripping him of all custody rights.
Leo hadn't been allowed to see his daughter in eight months. He had secretly slipped Maisie the cheap pink burner phone through a school fence just so she could call him if she was ever in danger.
"Maisie, sweetie," Leo whispered frantically into his phone, his deep voice shaking with apocalyptic panic. "Where are you? What happened to Mommy?"
"She fell down the big stairs," Maisie sobbed quietly through the speaker. "My foot got crushed. Arthur says it was an accident. But it wasn't an accident, Daddy. He pushed us."
Leo physically stopped breathing. The air in the construction yard was completely sucked out. Clara wasn't just asleep; she was in a medically induced coma.
