Chapter 1 - The Twitch

The sunroom of the grand American mansion was bathed in bright, warm daylight. Through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, the sprawling, manicured estate gardens looked peaceful, but the atmosphere inside the room was filled with quiet, heavy despair.
Sitting in a highly customized wheelchair was seven-year-old Sophia. She wore a delicate pink dress, her small legs locked into heavy metal braces. She had been completely paralyzed from the waist down since a horrific car accident two years ago.
Clara, a woman in her late twenties with a brunette updo and a classic black and white maid uniform, was gently dusting the window sill.
Suddenly, Sophia leaned forward. A beautiful yellow butterfly had landed on the outside of the glass. Sophia reached her tiny hand out, completely mesmerized.
As she stretched forward, something impossible happened.
Sophia’s right leg—the leg entirely encased in the heavy metal brace—suddenly twitched. It wasn't a spasm. It was a deliberate, controlled movement.
Clara froze completely. The dust rag slipped from her hands, landing silently on the polished marble floor.
"You moved," Clara whispered, her eyes wide with absolute, breathless shock.
Clara hastily dropped to her knees, gently touching Sophia's braced leg, tears of pure hope welling in her eyes.
Sophia looked down at her own leg, a bright, innocent, and deeply hopeful smile lighting up her face. "I tried," the little girl whispered back.
