Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

"Who locked this door?!" Enzo’s furious voice roared from the hallway.

Clara shoved the medical files back into the black box and slammed the lid shut. She didn't have time to hide.

The heavy oak doors were violently kicked open, the wood splintering around the lock. Enzo stormed into the office, followed closely by his armed bodyguards.

When Enzo saw Clara standing behind his private mahogany desk, his dark eyes turned completely black with lethal intent. In his world, a servant snooping in his private office was an immediate death sentence.

"What the hell are you doing in here?" Enzo whispered, his voice vibrating with demonic fury.

Clara didn't cower. She stood tall in her black and white uniform, staring down the most dangerous mafia boss in the city.

"I was looking for this," Clara stated firmly, picking up the heavy black lockbox and slamming it down onto the mahogany desk.

"You're a spy," Enzo sneered, pulling a suppressed pistol from his suit jacket and aiming it directly at Clara’s chest. "Who sent you? The Barone cartel? Did they pay you to poison my daughter?!"

"Nobody is paying me, Enzo!" Clara shouted, her fierce maternal instinct completely overriding her fear of the gun. "I am a licensed pediatric neurologist! I went undercover in this house because your fiancée blacklisted me from every hospital in the state!"

Enzo froze, the barrel of his pistol wavering for a fraction of a second. "What?"
