Chapter 5 - The Stolen File

Clara locked the heavy oak doors of the office behind her. She moved with blinding, tactical speed, completely shedding the persona of a simple housemaid.

She went straight to Enzo’s massive mahogany desk. She didn't search for cash or jewelry. She pulled out a small, heavy black lockbox that she knew contained Sophia’s original medical files from the night of the car accident two years ago.

Clara pulled a simple hairpin from her brunette updo. With the precise, practiced movements of a professional, she picked the lock in under ten seconds. The lid popped open.

She pulled out the thick medical file and quickly flipped to the MRI scans and the lead surgeon's final prognosis report.

As Clara read the bold, black text, her blood boiled with pure, unadulterated rage.

The report explicitly stated that Sophia’s spinal cord was not severed. There was severe swelling, but the doctors had predicted a full recovery with aggressive, daily physical therapy.

But attached to the back of the file was a secondary document. It was a transfer of care form, moving Sophia entirely out of the hospital and into the private care of Nurse Claire. The signature on the bottom of the transfer form belonged to Enzo’s current fiancée, Victoria.

The cinematic realization crashed over Clara like a freight train.

Victoria didn't want a disabled stepdaughter. She had hired Claire to deliberately keep Sophia paralyzed with massive doses of neuromuscular blockers, ensuring the little girl would eventually be institutionalized so Victoria could have Enzo all to herself.
