Chapter 4 - The Nurse's Alibi

"She is never going to walk again anyway!" Claire screamed, playing the role of the frustrated medical professional perfectly. "Her spine was shattered in the accident! I am trying to keep her comfortable, and this uneducated maid is reading webMD articles and playing doctor!"
Enzo stopped inches away from the two women. He looked down at Sophia.
Sophia was clutching the armrests of her wheelchair, looking up at Clara with wide, terrified eyes. "Daddy, please don't yell at Clara. She's my friend."
Enzo’s jaw tightened. He turned his piercing gaze to the silver tray. He didn't know anything about neuromuscular blockers or dosages. He only knew that the doctors at the hospital had told him Sophia’s paralysis was permanent. Claire had been highly recommended by his own syndicate's private medical team.
"Clara," Enzo stated coldly, completely devoid of empathy. "You clean the floors. You do not touch the medicine. If you ever interfere with my daughter's nurse again, I will have my men throw you out on the street. Now get out of my sight."
Clara’s heart broke into a million pieces. She looked at Sophia, who was silently crying.
"Yes, sir," Clara whispered, bowing her head submissively.
Clara turned around and walked out of the sunroom, leaving the little girl entirely in the hands of the monster. As the heavy wooden doors closed behind her, Clara heard the chilling sound of Claire forcing Sophia to swallow the water.
But Clara wasn't going to her quarters to cry. The submissive, terrified maid completely vanished the second she was out of Enzo’s sight.
