Chapter 2 - The Blocked Path

"Time for your medicine."

The cold, sharp voice echoed across the bright sunroom.

Claire, a private registered nurse in her thirties, stepped into the room aggressively. She wore a pristine white uniform, holding a small silver tray with a paper cup and a glass of water. Her face was devoid of any warmth or compassion. To the outside world, she was the highly-paid medical professional keeping Sophia alive. Behind closed doors, she was a terrifying, calculating monster.

Clara immediately stood up from the floor. Her eyes darted from Sophia’s twitching leg to the tiny white pill sitting in the paper cup on the silver tray.

Claire marched toward the wheelchair, intending to force the pill down the little girl's throat.

But Clara didn't move out of the way.

The maid stepped forward, directly blocking the nurse's path. She stood tall in her black and white uniform, radiating a sudden, stern, and unshakeable authority that a servant was never supposed to show.

"That dose is too high," Clara stated firmly, her voice entirely stripped of its usual submissive tone.

Claire stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes narrowing in pure, venomous disgust. "Excuse me? Are you telling me how to do my job, you glorified janitor? Move out of my way before I have you fired."

Standing quietly in the far background of the sunroom, entirely unnoticed by the two arguing women, was Enzo. He was a powerfully built man in his thirties wearing a tailored dark suit. He was Sophia’s father, the most feared syndicate boss in the city.
