Chapter 1 - The Hospital Corridor

The modern Boston hospital maternity corridor was blindingly bright, the harsh clinical lighting reflecting off the highly polished tile floors. Outside the massive windows, a heavy winter snowstorm blanketed the city, but the temperature inside the hallway had just dropped to absolute freezing.
Nathan abruptly halted in the middle of the corridor.
He was a man in his late thirties, wearing a heavy black overcoat over a dark shirt. Faint tattoos peeked out from his collar, and a small, fresh scratch marked his cheek. He had come to the maternity ward to support his new fiancée, who had been admitted for severe abdominal pain.
But as Nathan turned his head toward room 231, all the blood violently drained from his face.
Sitting in a wheelchair just outside the room was Claire. She was his ex-wife. She looked incredibly pale, her blonde hair tied up in a messy, exhausted bun, wearing a standard white hospital robe.
But it wasn't Claire that made Nathan’s heart completely stop beating. It was what she was holding.
Wrapped securely in a soft blue hospital blanket, resting against Claire’s chest, was a newborn baby boy.
"No..." Nathan whispered, the word escaping his lips in a breathless, paralyzed gasp.
He stumbled forward, drawn toward the wheelchair by an invisible, terrifying gravitational pull. He stared intently at the tiny, sleeping baby. The cinematic tension peaked as Nathan recognized the undeniable, distinct facial features staring back at him—the exact shape of the jaw, the dark tuft of hair. It was a perfect, miniature replica of himself.
