Chapter 2 - The Cold Denial

Nathan leaned over Claire's wheelchair, entirely invading her space, his dark eyes frantic as he searched her pale, exhausted face for an explanation.
Nine months ago, Nathan had brutally blindsided Claire. He had packed his bags in the middle of the night, slapped a set of divorce papers on the kitchen counter, and announced he was leaving her for Allison—a younger, wealthier woman he had been secretly seeing for a year.
When Claire had wept, begging him to stay, telling him she was pregnant with his child, Nathan had laughed in her face. He accused her of lying to trap him, claimed he was completely infertile, and told her if she actually was pregnant, she should find the "real father" to pay for it.
He hadn't spoken a single word to her since that night.
Claire didn't shrink away from his towering frame. She looked back at him with an expression so cold and detached it could have shattered glass.
"You don't get to ask me that," Claire stated, her voice devoid of any warmth or fear.
Suddenly, the door to room 231 opened.
Stepping into the hallway was Allison. She was Nathan’s new fiancée, a woman in her late twenties with long brown hair, wearing an expensive cream cashmere robe over her hospital gown. She was clutching her bandaged abdomen, having just been treated for a ruptured ovarian cyst.
Allison stopped dead in her tracks, staring in absolute shock at the scene unfolding in the corridor.
