Chapter 5 - The Financial Leash

Allison’s face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice. She let go of Nathan's coat, stepping back with a cold, calculating sneer.
"You aren't taking him?" Allison mocked, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet tone. "Let me remind you of exactly who you are, Nathan. You are a mid-level manager living in my penthouse. You drive my cars. I paid off the massive gambling debt you hid from your precious ex-wife. I bought your entire life."
Nathan’s jaw locked. The small scratch on his cheek, inflicted by a loan shark just a week ago, suddenly burned.
Claire watched the exchange in stunned silence, securing Owen tightly against her chest. She had always wondered where Nathan had suddenly gotten the money to hire such aggressive divorce lawyers. Now she knew. He had sold his soul to a wealthy mistress just to escape his own mistakes.
"If you don't file for custody of that child," Allison threatened flawlessly, "I will cut you off completely. I will throw your things onto the street, I will cancel the wedding, and I will let the loan sharks break your legs. You will have absolutely nothing."
The entire corridor went dead silent. The choice was hanging in the air.
Nathan looked at Allison, the woman holding the leash to his luxurious, fake life. Then he looked down at Claire, the loyal woman he had destroyed, and the beautiful, innocent son he had callously denied.
He was trapped.
Nathan slowly looked away from the baby. He turned his back on Claire.
