Chapter 2 - The Husband's Hesitation

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, terrifying tension completely electrified the elegant mansion.
Graham, a handsome thirty-eight-year-old man in a charcoal-gray sweater, sprinted to the edge of the staircase. He was followed by four horrified, elegantly dressed dinner guests, completely ruining the high-society evening.
"Nora!" Graham yelled, his voice cracking with panic.
He rushed down the wooden steps, carefully stepping over the shattered ceramic and the spilled food. He knelt directly beside his wife, his expressive brown eyes wide with fear. Nora was breathing shakily, tears of pure, physical agony welling in her eyes as she looked up at her husband.
She desperately needed him to protect her.
Graham looked up toward the top of the stairs, staring directly at his mother.
Judith was acting perfectly. The wealthy matriarch was violently trembling in her cream-colored dress, clutching her pearl necklace as if she were about to faint from the sheer trauma of witnessing the accident.
"She just slipped, Graham!" Judith cried out, her voice perfectly pitched to sound like a terrified victim. "She lost her balance! I tried to catch her!"
Graham looked back down at Nora. The panic in his eyes violently shifted into something much worse. It shifted into anxious hesitation. He knew exactly how toxic his mother was, but he was too much of a coward to confront her in front of the wealthy dinner guests.
"Mom didn't mean it!" Graham said anxiously, desperately trying to protect his mother from responsibility.
