Chapter 3 - The Refusal to Hide

"Call an ambulance," Nora whispered coldly, entirely devoid of human warmth.

An hour later, the warm, golden lighting of the mansion was violently replaced by the harsh, bright clinical lighting of a modern American hospital emergency department.

Nora sat painfully in a hospital wheelchair in the pale-gray examination room, holding one hand tightly against her bruised ribs. Graham stood nervously right beside her, sweating heavily in his charcoal-gray sweater.

A professional female emergency nurse wearing light-blue scrubs was carefully taking Nora's vitals.

"So, Mrs. Vance," the nurse asked gently, looking at her clipboard. "Can you tell me exactly how you fell down the stairs?"

Graham aggressively leaned forward, completely terrified of a scandal. "She just slipped on the wood. It was totally dark, and she was carrying a heavy dish—"

"She pushed me," Nora interrupted firmly.

The heavy, toxic silence in the emergency room was absolutely deafening.

The nurse looked up sharply from her clipboard, her eyes narrowing as she looked back and forth between the injured woman and the sweating husband.

Graham physically stopped breathing. His handsome face flushed a violent red as he realized Nora was absolutely refusing to hide the truth.

"Nora, please," Graham hissed through his teeth, trying to keep his voice down. "Don't do this. My mother is a respected socialite. You're going to ruin her reputation!"

"Your mother tried to break my neck, Graham," Nora stated clinically, her voice echoing with a freezing, lethal frequency.

👉 The curtains of the examination room were pulled back, and the doctor stepped into the absolute crossfire.
