Chapter 5 - The Doctor's Order

The heavy, suffocating tension in the examination room was absolutely deafening.
Dr. Mercer quietly set down Nora's heavy plastic medical chart on the counter. He didn't speak immediately. He looked at Graham, and then he looked deeply into Nora's expressive brown eyes. He realized the terrifying magnitude of what he was looking at on the digital scans, and he knew it absolutely required a completely private conversation.
"Sir," Dr. Mercer stated seriously, his deep voice carrying a freezing, lethal frequency. "I need you outside."
Graham completely froze.
His mouth parted slightly. The arrogant, defensive son completely vanished. For the very first time since the accident, Graham appeared genuinely, breathlessly frightened.
"What?" Graham choked out, completely losing his corporate confidence. "I'm her husband! I have a legal right to be in here!"
"You have a legal right to wait in the hallway until I clear this room," Dr. Mercer commanded flawlessly, entirely devoid of human mercy. "Security is standing right outside the curtain. Walk out, or they will physically remove you."
Graham physically staggered backward. He looked at Nora, desperately hoping she would defend him.
Nora didn't even blink. She stared at him with cold, terrifying apathy.

Graham turned around and practically ran out of the examination room, utterly humiliated and completely stripped of his fake authority.
👉 Dr. Mercer waited until the door clicked shut before he finally turned the medical monitor toward the terrified wife.
