Chapter 7 - The True Abuse

To understand the absolute, unhinged horror freezing the blood in Nora's veins, one had to look exactly two years into the past.
Before she met Graham, Nora had been trapped in a violently abusive marriage with a terrifying, deeply connected corporate CEO. He had brutally beaten her, breaking her ribs and threatening to kill her if she ever went to a hospital. She had finally escaped him in the middle of the night, changing her name and starting a completely new life.
She had never told Graham. She genuinely believed she had left the violence entirely in the past.
But tonight, Judith's vicious push down the stairs hadn't just bruised her cheek. It had actively ripped open the terrifying physical trauma Nora had spent years trying to hide.
"I... I fell off a horse a few years ago," Nora choked out, desperate tears flooding her brown eyes as she frantically tried to cover her tracks.
"I've been an emergency physician for twenty years, Nora," Dr. Mercer whispered coldly, entirely devoid of judgment but radiating absolute, undeniable protection. "A horse didn't do this. A fist did. And whoever did this to you is highly likely to kill you."
Nora broke down, weeping violently into her hands. The crushing weight of her hidden trauma completely collapsed her strong facade.
