Chapter 4 - The Emergency Doctor

Dr. Evan Mercer, a distinguished forty-five-year-old emergency physician wearing a crisp white medical coat and navy-blue scrubs, walked into the room. He had short dark hair with subtle gray at the temples, and his blue eyes radiated a calm, professional authority that completely dominated the tense space.
He didn't acknowledge Graham's panicked rambling. He looked directly at Nora.
"I'm Dr. Mercer," he said smoothly, pulling up a stool next to her wheelchair. "We've got the results of your X-rays and your CT scan."
Graham immediately tried to take control of the situation.
"Doctor, look, it was just a misunderstanding at the house," Graham panicked loudly, stepping aggressively between Dr. Mercer and the illuminated medical monitor displaying Nora's digital X-rays. "My wife is just very stressed. My mother would never intentionally hurt her. It was a complete accident."
Dr. Mercer slowly raised his eyes toward Graham.
The cinematic realism of the doctor's firm, unwavering expression completely paralyzed the husband. Dr. Mercer didn't yell. He didn't argue. He simply stared at the cowardly man with pure, professional disgust until Graham physically stepped back.
Dr. Mercer turned his attention back to the illuminated medical monitor.
A tight close-up captured the doctor studying the high-definition bone scans. His professional composure didn't break, but his natural micro-expressions shifted violently. The polite, clinical distance completely vanished, replaced by visible, profound concern.
