Chapter 1 - The Driveway Execution

The sprawling American mansion estate was shrouded in a heavy, suffocating tension. The bright afternoon sun reflected off the long stone driveway, but the atmosphere near the iron gates was anything but warm.

Alessandro, a fearsome man in his late thirties with dark hair, neck and hand tattoos, and a tailored all-black suit, was walking toward his armored SUV. He was the undisputed boss of the city's most powerful syndicate. He commanded an army. He controlled politicians.

But he was completely unaware that the man walking right behind him was holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at the back of his head.

"Time's up, boss," the bodyguard whispered coldly, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Suddenly, a tiny blur of motion darted from the tall garden hedges.

Lily, a six-year-old girl with brown hair tied in a white bow, wearing a miniature black and white maid's dress, white socks, and black shoes, lunged forward. With all her tiny strength, she grabbed Alessandro’s black sleeve and violently yanked him toward the side exit leading to the botanical gardens.

Alessandro stumbled, entirely thrown off balance.

Pffft. The suppressed bullet missed Alessandro’s skull by a fraction of an inch, shattering the window of the black SUV instead.

Alessandro’s lethal survival instincts kicked in instantly. He didn't ask questions. He scooped Lily up in his tattooed arms and sprinted deep into the thick, manicured hedges, sliding behind a massive marble fountain just as three more armed guards rushed into the driveway.

Alessandro crouched in the dirt, breathing heavily, pulling his own weapon.

Lily pressed a tiny finger to her lips, her eyes wide with innocent terror.

"Stay quiet and follow me," Lily whispered, pointing toward a hidden service tunnel beneath the fountain.
