Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Checkmate

"Before you pull those triggers," Alessandro stated coldly, holding up the detonator, "you should know that the black SUV in the driveway wasn't just my transport. It was loaded with fifty pounds of C4 explosive. If my heart stops, my thumb comes off this dead-man's switch, and this entire estate, along with all the cash in your bags, turns into a crater."
The ten guards lowered their weapons instantly. They were greedy, not suicidal.
"He's bluffing!" Valentina shrieked hysterically, completely losing her mind. "Kill him!"
"Drop your guns and walk out the front door, and you get to live," Alessandro offered the guards, his voice devoid of mercy. "Stay, and you die with her."
The guards didn't hesitate. They threw their rifles onto the marble floor and sprinted out the front doors, completely abandoning Valentina to the wrath of the man she had betrayed.
Valentina was entirely alone.
She backed away toward the grand staircase, hyperventilating, realizing her three-year empire of lies had just violently collapsed into dust.
"Alessandro, please!" Valentina begged, dropping to her knees, ruining her expensive red dress. "I loved you! She was always the favorite! I just wanted a piece of the power! I'll leave the country! You'll never see me again!"
Alessandro walked slowly toward her, his dark eyes radiating a cold, demonic vengeance.
