Chapter 5 - The Locked Door

Lily stopped at the end of a long, narrow stone corridor. In front of them was a heavy, reinforced steel door with a digital keypad.

Standing nervously in front of the door was Maria, Lily’s mother. She was a woman in her thirties, wearing a black and white maid uniform, trembling violently as she held a heavy iron crowbar.

"Mr. Alessandro!" Maria gasped, dropping the crowbar and pulling Lily into a desperate hug. "Thank God you're alive! I didn't know who to trust! Valentina's guards are everywhere!"

"You did perfectly, Maria," Alessandro said, his voice a low, rumbling anchor of protection. He looked at the heavy steel door. "Is she in there?"

"Yes, sir," Maria nodded, tears spilling down her cheeks. "But Valentina changed the passcode this morning. I can't get it open."

Alessandro didn't panic. He stepped up to the digital keypad.

He didn't try to guess the code. He raised his suppressed pistol and fired two flawless, tactical shots directly into the electronic locking mechanism. The keypad shattered in a shower of sparks.

Alessandro holstered his weapon, grabbed the heavy steel handle, and violently ripped the door open.

The room inside was small, damp, and lit by a single, flickering bulb. There was a thin mattress on the floor and a small tray of stale food.

Huddled in the corner, wearing a tattered, dirty dress, was a woman. She was painfully thin, her beautiful face pale from years without sunlight, but her eyes—the eyes Alessandro had fallen in love with—were exactly the same.

"Sofia," Alessandro choked out, falling to his knees on the cold stone floor.
