Chapter 1 - The Dog Bowl

The elegant dining room was filled with the mouth-watering scent of a massive holiday feast. Warm, golden lighting reflected off crystal wine glasses and expensive silver platters. The room was packed with blurry, well-dressed guests, laughing loudly and drinking expensive champagne.
But at the end of the long mahogany table, a brutal, stomach-turning humiliation was taking place.
Ernest, an older Black man in his seventies with distinguished gray hair, stood completely still. He was wearing a simple, clean light blue button-down shirt. He looked down quietly at the spot set for him at the table.
There was no china plate. There was no silverware.
Sitting directly in front of Ernest was a dented metal dog bowl, filled to the brim with dry, cheap kibble.
Ernest looked up, his weathered face tight with confusion. "This house?" he whispered, his deep voice carrying a heavy, heartbroken weight.
Standing across the table was his thirty-year-old son, Louis. Wearing a sharp black designer shirt, Louis pointed directly at his father and let out a loud, incredibly cruel laugh.
"There's dinner for freeloaders too, old man," Louis mocked aggressively, ensuring every guest in the room heard him.
Standing right beside Louis was his new girlfriend, Carla. She wore a plunging dark red dress, completely inappropriate for a family dinner. She wasn't just laughing. She had her smartphone out, explicitly recording Ernest’s humiliation for social media.
