Chapter 1 - The Men Warren Recognized in the Hallway

Giulietta Marconi knew the marriage was over before Preston Hale swung the golf club.

The bridal bedroom was still dressed for a wedding.

Warm chandelier light reflected from the mirrored vanity. Her white lace gown spread across the carpet. A burgundy velvet sofa sat beneath the tall windows, and a rolling garment rack packed with wedding clothes stood near the wall.

The wooden door was locked.

Preston stood between Giulietta and that door.

White shirt.

Black trousers.

Metal golf club in both hands.

Only thirty minutes earlier, guests downstairs had been drinking champagne and waiting for the bride and groom to return for photographs.

Now Preston slowly approached her with the club raised.

His face was not frantic.

That made him more frightening.

“My father used this to teach my mother obedience.”

Giulietta looked at him.

Then at the club.

Then back at Preston.

She said nothing.

Instead, she calmly reached for her left hand.

Removed her engagement ring.

And placed it on the mirrored vanity.

CLINK.

Preston stared at the ring.

“What are you doing?”

Giulietta’s expression did not change.

“Making this simple.”

Something snapped behind his eyes.

He swung.

Fast.

Hard.

The golf club cut through the space where Giulietta’s head had been.

She ducked.

Caught Preston’s wrist.

Redirected the momentum of his arm.

The club slipped from his hand.

CLATTER.

Metal hit the floor.

Before Preston could recover, Giulietta drove one powerful right hand across his face.

THUD.

His head snapped sideways.

He stumbled backward.

Then crashed directly into the same rolling garment rack.

CRASH.

The rack folded beneath him.

Wedding gowns, jackets, garment bags, and hangers spilled everywhere.

Preston disappeared beneath the collapsed frame and clothing.

No second punch came.

Giulietta did not go after him.

She simply straightened.

Breathing hard.

Composed again.

Then—

BANG.

The locked bedroom door burst open.

Warren Hale stormed inside.

Sixty-four.

Silver hair.

Navy suit.

Preston’s father.

His gaze landed first on his son trapped beneath the fallen garment rack.

Then on Giulietta.

“You’re marrying into my family.”

Giulietta slowly turned toward him.

Warren took another step—

and stopped.

Two men had appeared in the hallway behind him.

Dark suits.

Silent.

Still.

Marconi security.

Giulietta looked Warren directly in the eye.

“No.”

Her voice was almost conversational.

“Your son is marrying into mine.”

The anger vanished from Warren’s face.

Instantly.

Not because two large men frightened him physically.

Because he recognized them.

Giulietta saw it happen.

The slight widening of his eyes.

The way his shoulders stiffened.

The color leaving his face.

One of the security men did nothing more than meet Warren’s gaze.

That was enough.

Behind Giulietta, Preston remained dazed beneath the collapsed wedding clothes.

Warren did not ask who the men were.

Did not tell them to leave.

Did not threaten to call police.

He simply stared.

Terrified.

And Giulietta understood that Warren Hale had encountered Marconi security before.

May you like

Long before she ever agreed to marry his son.
